Did Anyone See This Coming?

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday February 28

When the 2002 Dubai World Cup winner shuttled to Australia for the first time in 2003, Australian breeders were not entirely sure what to make of him, but 20 years on he’s become a sire that has had and is going to have a profound influence on our industry.

Bred in Ireland, but raced in North America and Dubai, Street Cry (IRE) was placed in a Breeders Cup Juvenile, but achieved his career highlight wins at four with Group I wins at 1800 and 2000m.

Street Cry (IRE) has proven to be an exceptional stallion.

The son of Machiavellian shuttled to Darley Australia for his first four seasons standing at a fee of $38,500 the first year and then $16,500 for the next three before a break of three years during which his stocks shot through the roof.

When he came back in 2009, Street Cry was a made stallion standing at a fee of $110,000 and never stood for anything less in subsequent years.

He notably sired Australia’s best mare Winx and North America best mare Zenyatta and his influence as a sire of sires and broodmare sire was demonstrated at the highest level last weekend.

The best horse in the country is his grand-son Anamoe, who claimed his eighth Group I win in the ATC Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

When Anamoe retires to stud he will be the hottest first season sire in the land no question and his offspring may well lay the foundations of a sire dynasty for the future.

The first juvenile Group I race of the season, the MRC Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) was won by Little Brose, another grand-son of Street Cry, this colt by his NZ based sire son Per Incanto (USA)

Darley also got another result from Anamoe’s sire Street Boss with blue-blood Pericles, the sibling of Group I winners Helmet and Epaulette, winning the Group II MRC Autumn Stakes (1800m)

Street Cry also sired the dams of two new stakes-winners last Saturday.

Three year-old I Am Invincible filly Shuffle Dancer won the Group II MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) .

I Am Invincible has had seven winners from seven runners out of Street Cry mares and Shuffle Dancer is the second stakes-winner joining Waltz on By and there are also two stakes placed horses in Forbidden City and Rubamos.

Three year-old Shalaa (IRE) gelding Recommendation won the Group III MRC Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at his fourth start.

Shalaa has had five winners from six runners out of Street Cry mares with Recommendation the first stakes-winner.
