Royally Bred Snitzel Filly Breaks Maiden at Canterbury

Mark Smith - Wednesday February 1

Befitting her $1,700,000 price tag at the 2018 National Broodmare Sale, the Group 1 winning Savabeel mare Diademe has been courted by the best, and she has delivered in the sales ring and the track.

Diademe is the dam of stakes-winner Shadow Misson (Fastnet Rock) and the $1,000,000 colt Conqueror (Fastnet Rock), who placed in the Group II Sandown Guineas and Karaka Million.

Her 3yo Snitzel filly Byron Belle is regarded highly enough to contest the Group 1 Flight Stakes and Group II Tea Rose Stakes before breaking her maiden, which she achieved at start five over 1250m at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Ridden by Jason Collett for John Sargent, Byron Belle found a narrow seam down the straight to defeat the odd-on favourite Hollywood Hero (Sacred Falls) by a neck, with Lalaguna (I Am Invincible) a further one and a half lengths back in third.

A $460,000 purchase for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/Waimarie Partnership from the Baramul Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Byron Belle was transferred to the Sargent stable before making her debut.

She is the third winner from as many to race for Diademe, whose I Am Invincible colt failed to make his $600,000 reserve at last year’s Magic Millions. He has been named Escalante.

Diademe has a yearling colt by I Am Invincible, which was withdrawn from the Magic Millions in January, and was covered by Snitzel again last spring.
