Chaillot Puts Broodmare Career on Hold - Tarzino Half-Brother at Karaka

Mark Smith - Saturday January 28

The 2021 Group III VRC Frances Tressady Stakes winner Chaillot put her broodmare career on hold when missing to Toronado (IRE), which may have been a blessing in disguise.

Making her debut for Steven O’Dea and Mattew Hoysted stable, the 6yo daughter of Testa Rossa made her first appearance since finishing down the track in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington in October, to dominate in the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) at Caloundra on Saturday.

Ridden by Ben Thompson, Chaillot defeated stablemate Namazu (Medaglia d’Oro) by one and a quarter length, with Roman Aureus (Red Element) three-quarter lengths back in third.

Trilogy Racing shelled out $400,000 for Chaillot from the Newgate consignment at the 2022 National Broodmare Sale.

With her fourth stakes win, Chaillot advances her record to six wins, and a third from 17 starts with earnings of $544,175.

“It’s been a good race for us with Scallopini winning a couple of times as well as Sir Moments,” O’Dea said.

“She is a new acquisition for the stable. Trilogy bought her as a broodmare last year. She had a spring preparation with Mick Price where wet tracks hindered her. It’s a step down coming to Queensland, but it was great to get a result with her first up.

“She went to Toronado and came up negative. Because it was late in the season, it was decided to put her back in work.

“She is a really good mare and only had to find her old form to be winning a race like this.”

Bred by Gerry Harvey, Chaillot was a $25,000 purchase by Alexander Racing/McKeever Bloodstock out of the Baramul Stud draft at the 2018 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

She is the best of five winners from six to race out of the Encosta de Lago mare Mary Of Modena.

A half-sister to the dam of the Champion 2YO in Singapore in 2016, Lim's Racer (Red Giant), from the family of Group 1 AJC Champagne Stakes winner Isolda (Sir Tristram),

Mary Of Modena has a Tarzino colt in the Westbury Stud draft in Book 1 of the NZB Karaka Yearling Sale (lot 339).
