Humidor can expect a tougher training programme heading into Saturday week's Caulfield Cup after his Turnbull Stakes effort.
The great mare Winx had Humidor beaten a long way from home on her way to a 6 ½ length romp in the Turnbull Stakes in which the Caulfield Cup fancy finished more than seven lengths from the winner in third.
Sportsbet eased Humidor's Caulfield Cup price to $7.50 but Weir told RSN927 that Humidor had pulled up well after the Turnbull Stakes before signalling a change in training for the ex-Kiwi in the lead-up to the Caulfield Cup.
"I didn't think he could beat her but I didn't think he would finish as far behind as what he did," Weir said.
"We may be focussing on worrying about getting him to do things right instead of just bloody training the horse.
"If you take anything out of the run, he was still OK in the last 100 and he was still OK through the line but we'll really wind him up this fortnight and get him to improve a bit.
"The way he pulled up, the run will do him the world of good. He didn't pull up super big but he just pulled up like we had been a little soft on him."
Weir said he would experiment with headgear before deciding whether to change Humidor's gear for the Caulfield Cup but the son Teofilo's return to old habits was a concern for the premier Victorian trainer.
"He has come through the run really well and the plan was obviously to have him peaking on Caulfield Cup day and I think we're still on track for that apart from a bit below-par run on Saturday," Weir said.
"If we have to make a gear change between now and the Caulfield Cup, there is probably no better time to do it.
"The disappointing thing for me was the way he wanted to lay in under pressure in the straight. I thought we were getting well on top of that stuff."
Humidor's stablemate Amelie's Star jumped to the second line of Sportsbet's Melbourne Cup market at $6 after her strong win in the Group III Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington.
Amelie's Star's victory also earned a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption for the mare.
