One to Watch – Sha Tin

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 2

Capitalist kept his Hong Kong record perfect with four winners from four runners when this promising three year-old made a winning debut at Sha Tin on Sunday as a short priced favourite.

Trained by Ricky Yiu and ridden by Vincent Ho, Chilli Baba overcame a sluggish start to finish off hard and win the 1000m dash by a head on the line.

“He was a bit slower out than we expected him to be, so I think 1200 or 1400m in the future would be suitable,” Ho said.

“Lucky, he was big enough and brave enough to take those gaps near the finish.

“Once the gap opened, he started to look around a little bit because he started to look around so there’s still room for improvement. Nice performance.”

Chilli Baba as a yearling.

A $155,000 Inglis Premier purchase for his trainer from the Twin Hills Stud draft, Chilli Baba is the first winner for Keep Me Warm, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group I winning filly Speak Fondly from the family of dual Group I winner Kenedna and Australian Horse of the Year Bounding Away.

The leading Australian third crop sire by winners, Capitalist has big numbers at upcoming sales with 35 at Magic Millions Book 1 and 39 for Inglis Classic.
