Dixie Blossom's In The Spring

Mark Smith - Saturday October 7

Dixie Blossoms turned the tables on stablemate and Golden Pendant conqueror Daysee Doom to become the first mare to go back to back in the Group III Angst Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

The Ron Quinton-trained mares have been fierce rivals with Daysee Doom usually coming off the best but she had no answer to Dixie Blossoms who received a charmed ride by Kerrin McEvoy to win by three-quarters of a length with the Les Bridge-trained Zenalicious the same margin back in third.  (photo Steve Hart).

"They are two wonderful mares for us. It's a shame we've had to keep running them against each other but they've evened the score today," Quinton said.

"I'm very proud of both mares and they were ridden beautifully."

"It's very likely they'll go to the Myer (Stakes) now. That's a month away this year so we'll work a plan out," Quinton said.

Raced by her breeder Alan Osburg, Dixie Blossoms advances her record to 5 wins, 5 seconds and 3 thirds from 18 starts with earnings of $732,360.

A daughter of the former Darley shuttler Street Sense (USA), Dixie Blossoms is out of the winning Star Way (GB) mare Whistle Dixie whose dam Proteaceae (Kaapstad) is a half-sister to Group 1 NZ Derby winner Zonda (Zabeel) and Group II PJ O'Shea Stakes winner Magnolia Hall (Noble Bijou) who was third in a Melbourne Cup.

Whistle Dixie was pensioned in 2013 and Dixie Blossoms is her final foal.
