Another Spring Champion Stakes Winner for High Chaparral

Tara Madgwick - Saturday October 7
Ill-fated High Chaparral (IRE) is one stallion that has been sorely missed by breeders seeking to breed a Classic horse and featured today when his progressive son Ace High scored a bold front running victory.

A last start winner of the Group III ATC Gloaming Stakes, Ace High again showed his staying potential when leading all the way for Tye Angland to win the 2000 metre staying test by a short head over Snitzel colt Tangled.

"We had to go forward again, but he had a beautiful run in front," said Tye Angland.

"He was running on empty at the finish but he got there," said an emotional Tye Angland, who missed attending his brother's wedding to ride the colt.

Ace High returnsAce High (images Steve Hart) has now won three of 11 starts earning just shy of $500,000 and holds an entry for the Group I VRC Victoria Derby.

"He's going to better when he can follow a horse, but today we had to make it a staying test," said winning trainer David Payne.

"He's definitely a Derby horse. I've run a few in it including Criterion and Honorius.

"We've always liked him."

A $130,000 Magic millions purchase from the Bell River Thoroughbreds draft for his trainer, Ace High runs for well known owner John Cordina's Summertime Thoroughbreds.

Ace High was bred by Bruce Reid Racing and is the best of two winners from Come Sunday, an unraced half-sister by Redoute's Choice to stakes-winners That's a Good Idea and Kneeling.

Sadly, Come Sunday died last year and her final foal is a yearling colt by Hallowed Crown.

Ace High is the 19th Group I winner for High Chaparral, who enjoyed a Group double on Saturday with Bring Me the Roses taking out the Group II VRC Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington. Read about here here.

Ace High is the third Spring Champion Stakes winner for High Chaparral joining Monaco Consul and Dundeel.
