The Japanese struck first on Hong Kong International Day at Sha Tin when Win Marilyn (JPN) stormed home under Damian Lane in the Group 1 The Longines Hong Kong Vase (2400m).
There was a sensation at the start when the German representative Mendocino (GER) was stuck in the stalls and took no part in the race.
Coming widest on the turn, Win Marilyn launched down the centre of the track. The Takahisa Tezuka-trained daughter of Screen Hero defeated Godolphin’s Golden Horn gelding Botanik (IRE) by one and a half lengths, with Japan’s dual Hong Kong Vase winner Glory Vase (Deep Impact) in third.
Coming off a second in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Cup, Win Marilyn was winning at the elite level for the first time and has been winless in four starts this season.
“It’s very special to win a Group 1 in Hong Kong; I’ve been here on numerous occasions and have not been able to break through,” Lane said.

Win Marilyn advances her record to six wins, two seconds and a third from 17 starts.
By Maurice’s sire Screen Hero, Win Marilyn is a half-sister to Group III winner Win Malerei Matsurida Gogh) and is the best of seven winners from eight to race out of the Australian-bred mare Cosmo Cielo.
A daughter Fusaichi Pegasus (USA), Cosmo Cielo is a half-sister to Group III Adelaide Adelaide Guineas winner Shoreblue (Bluebird) and dual-listed winner Kaladan.
