Spirit of Boom's Malaboom Goes Coast to Coast in Calaway Gal

Mark Smith - Saturday December 10

After copping a bad beat with Facile in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery at Randwick, Aquis Farm’s Tony Fung was on the wrong end of another photo when Empress Of Wonder failed to catch the Spirit Of Boom filly Malaboom in the Listed Aquis Stallions Calaway Gal Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by Ben Thompson for Matthew Dale, Malaboom improved off her debut sixth in the Magic Millions 2yo Ballarat Classic to lead all the way. She defeated the fast-finishing Choisir filly, Empress of Wonder by a half-neck with a long-neck back to the Exceed And Excel filly Excel D'Or in third.

Kurrinda Bloodstock shelled out $80,000 for Malaboom from the Eureka Stud draft at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Kurrinda Bloodstock’s Sean Driver was thrilled with the victory.

“I am so happy because we had a pretty average day at Scone yesterday,” Driver said.

“Matthew has done a wonderful job with the filly.

“I love Spirit Of Boom. It might help the cause in buying another one at the Magic (Millions).”

A half-sister to stakes-placed Hard to Say (Exceed and Excel), Malaboom is the fifth winner from as many to race for the Listed Blue Diamond Preview winner Malasun (Red Ransom).

A $170,000 purchase for Harry McAlpine Bloodstock at the 2019 Inglis Great Southern Sale, Malasun is a half-sister to Group II Autumn Classic winner Stokehouse (Anabaa).

Not much luck for Malasun in recent years, missing in 2020 and slipping last year.

Malaboom is the 19th black-type winner for Spirit Of Boom. The Eureka Stud stallion has 25 catalogued for the Gold Coast and nine at the Inglis Classic.
