Hometown Heroine Amelia's Jewel Triumphs in Northerly Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday December 3

Given a gem of a ride by Pat Carbery, local heroine Amelia’s Jewel turned back the eastern state challenge in the $1,500,000 Group 1 Drummond Golf Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Trained by Simon Miller the 3yo daughter of Siyouni (FR) defeated the Will Clarken-trained blueblood Ironclad (GB) (Dubawi) by a length with a further half-length back to Steinem (GB) (Frankel) in third.

Godolphin’s warrior Cascadian (GB) had a torrid trip from an outside barrier and finished fourth.

A homebred for Peter and Annie Walsh's Amelia Park, Amelia’s Jewel advances her record to six wins and a second from seven starts with earnings of $1,671,300

A daughter of champion French stallion Siyouni (FR), Amelia’s Jewel is the first foal of the stakes placed Canford Cliffs mare Bumbasina (IRE), was a 75,000 guineas purchase for Louis Le Metayer's Astute Bloodstock at the 2019 Tattersalls July Sale.

Peter Walsh is a big fan of Siyouni (FR) and he sent Bumbasina to the Haras de Bonneval stallion to southern hemisphere time.

Walsh said it had been a long wait for his first Group 1 winner.

“I’ve waited fifty years for it, but it was worth it,” Walsh said.

“It’s a bit surreal, I think I might have died and gone to heaven.

“I have had seven seconds, two thirds and two fourths in Group 1s.

“We think she is a superstar, and we love her.”

It was a fifth Group 1 and a third Northerly for Carbery and a belated first win at the highest level for Miller.

“I just love winning. Whether it’s a Northam maiden or a Group 1,” Miller said.

“She is just a freak. She has an unbelievable engine with a huge stride, and a great brain.”

Bumbasina (IRE) is a half-sister to Group II winner Epona Plays (Australia) and Group III winner Dolce Strega (Zoffany). She has a 2yo colt by Merchant Navy, which topped Magic Millions Perth Book 2, selling for $160,000. He has been named True Heroes and is in training with Sean and Jake Casey.

Bumbasina (IRE) has a yearling colt by Blue Point (IRE) in the Segenhoe Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale in January.

After missing last season, Bumbasina (IRE) boarded the plane to France in May for another date with Siyouni (FR), again to southern hemisphere time.
