Pinhook Success Highlights Ready2Race

Media Release - Thursday October 5

An outstanding pin-hooking result for the top Lot highlighted the 2017 Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Oaklands Junction.

Brian Jenkins of Uppergumtree Farm was thrilled when Hong Kong's David Lui, of Sweetbriar Equine, bought Lot 86, his impressiveWar x Crevasse colt, for $420,000.

The colt, pictured, was a $155,000 buy at this year's Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

"The colt truly deserves it,'' Jenkins said.

"He'd been very popular with potential buyers these past few days, his breeze was excellent and his temperament, well, it's faultless.

"He's a lovely clean colt across the board and his popularity was there for all to see at the end of the day.''

Lui said the horse would remain in Australia for now before any decision was made whether he would race in Hong Kong or remain here.

"We'll give him some time and assess him and then we'll decide what to do. We're not in a rush to push the horse,'' Lui said.

"War, he's a new sire but the yearling price of this colt was $155,000 so you are expecting to pay a good price for it.

"He's a beautifully-bred colt and a very well built, he looks good and walks good and has a beautiful head. Everything made him a standout of the sale.''

Leading vendor by average (for three or more Lots sold) today was Blake Ryan, with all four of his juveniles selling at an average of $110,000.

With private sales still occurring, the sale average sits at $69,020 and the median at $50,000.

Yu Long Investments was the leading buyer by both aggregate ($534,000) and average ($133,500) for three or more Lots purchased.

"There was a broad buying bench with an especially solid turnout of Asian buyers, largely from mainland China and Hong Kong,'' Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said.

"There were signs that a very strong yearling market earlier this year made it more difficult to balance vendor and buyer expectations initially, but there were a good number of pin-hook outcomes.

"The clearance rate picked up as the sale progressed and will improve further with many private sales for our clients currently being negotiated.''
