Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday October 14

The Listed Bisley Workwear Reginald Allen Stakes is far from the most lucrative contest at Randwick on Saturday, but it does carry some priceless black-type for the three-year-old fillies.

The race features a host of lightly raced bluebloods, including the Frankel x Samantha Miss filly Call Di and the Snitel x Norzita filly Orzala.

Bob Hannon’s homebred filly Razeta (Deep Field), a sister to Cosmic Force from the family of Dark Jewels’ half-sister Nippy Vista, looks good value at $34.

And there are a host of fillies descending from outstanding racemares.

Dynamic Syndications’ Lonhro filly Lonrioli is a sixth-generation descendent of the remarkable Indian Summer.

Speaking of Lonhro, race favourite Parisal (Astern) is a granddaughter of Lonhro’s three-quarter sister Hexameter.

Lonhro features as the damsire of Amati, one of four fillies in the race from the last crop of Widden Stud’s Golden Slipper winner Sebring.

There is quite a bit of Lonhro about Amati a $210,000 Easter yearling

Like Sebring, Amati is a Corumbene Stud-bred and carries the colours of Star Thoroughbreds.

The Chris Waller-trained filly has been consistent since making a winning debut at Canterbury in May.

A $210,000 purchase for Star Thoroughbreds / Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Amati is the fourth winner from as many foals out of Cloak Of Night.

A $130,000 Easter purchase for Proven Thoroughbreds, Cloak Of Night won three of her 13 starts before selling to Corumbene Stud for $85,000 at the 2016 National Broodmare Sale.

A half-sister sister to stakes-placed Beatitude (Quest For Fame), Cloak Of The Night is a granddaughter of the Luskin Star mare Royal Progeny, a half-sister to Crown Jester (Baguette).

Bred and raced by Inghams Enterprises, Crown Jester reeled off five consecutive wins, including the Group III Todman Slipper Trial.

On the eve of the 1981 Golden Slipper, Mike Willesee shelled out $500,000 for a quarter share in Crown Jester.

The track came up heavy, and Crown Jester struggled into fifth spot behind Full On Aces.

A fortnight later, the son of Baguette was back on his pedestal in the Rex White Handicap at Randwick, which brought the curtain down on his career.

He retired to Woodlands Stud before standing at John Foyster’s Guntawang Stud and Raheen Stud.

Never covering more than 70 mares a season, Crown Jester never received the accolades he deserved.

He sired the Golden Slipper winners Rory’s Jester and Guineas, and a daughter produced the Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha.

Crown Jester’s dam, Anjudy (Wilkes), won the 1972 AJC Champagne Stakes for Jack and Bob Ingham.

The brothers paid just $5,000 for the daughter of Wilkes at Easter after purchasing her talented brother Punch for $7,500 two years earlier.
