Group I Contenders for Zoustar

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 23

The first crop of Northern Hemisphere bred two year-olds by Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar have made their mark this year and the Group I Cheveley Park Stakes (6f) and Group I Middle Park Stakes (6f) run at Newmarket on Saturday will both feature a runner by the Golden Rose winning son of Northern Meteor.

Zoustar has sired nine winners in Europe so far this year with the best of them being tough and speedy filly Lezoo, who will take her place in the Cheveley Park and is currently third in the betting behind a pair of No Nay Never fillies in Meditate and Trillium.

Trained by Ralph Beckett, Lezoo has been super consistent with three wins and a second from her four runs with a last start win in the Group III Princess Margaret Stakes and William Buick takes over the ride from Frankie Dettori.

Lining up in the Group I Middle Park Stakes is exciting colt Zoology, who is facing a big step up in grade having had just one previous start for a commanding win at Yarmouth 10 days ago.

Trained by James Ferguson for Qatar Racing, Zoology was ultra-impressive and is at odds of 10-1 despite meeting a quality field with race favourite the No Nay Never colt Blackbeard, a last start Group I winner of the Prix Morny.

Zoustar has made a great start to the season here in Australia and is currently leading the Australian General Sires List by earnings and also the 3YO Sires List by earnings.

Win, lose or draw in the UK, for Zoustar to have a runner in each of those elite Group I sprint races for juveniles is a win in itself.
