Press Statement Mare Heading for Group Races

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday September 21

Press Statement is one of the quiet achievers on the Vinery Stud roster and has a quality performer in smart mare Roots, who will be headed back to Black Type racing following a stylish second up win at Canterbury Farm on Wednesday.

Trained by Chris Waller, stakes-placed Roots contested Group races at her last three runs before spelling and has returned in great shape reeling off two wins in a row!

She swept home for James McDonald to win the Benchmark 78 event over 1550m by a length and a half running away.

“She won with relative ease and it was a dominant performance,” said assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth.

“She’ll be on to bigger and better things now, most likely the Angst Stakes (Group III on October 8) against her own sex on a bigger track and up to 1600m.”

James McDonald is confident the daughter of Press Statement can measure up to Black Type.

“She’s got a tremendous turn of foot and it feels like you are stealing races when you are riding a horse like her in Wednesday races because she is definitely Group class,” he said.

Roots was a $52,000 purchase for Yugengaisha Murakami Kinya Bokujo on the recommendation of Sydney based bloodstock agent Satomi Oka, from the Vinery Stud draft at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale Highway Session.

Roots looks like a great value purchase from Inglis Classic.

She has the tidy record of four wins and two placings from nine starts with prizemoney in excess of $16,000. Roots is the best of two winners from Arctic Success, a half-sister to Group I STC Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, the dam of stakes-winner Lillemor.

A dual Group I winner by Hinchinbrook, Press Statement is a value option on the Vinery roster priced at $8,800.
