Topical Tips to Lighten the Saddest of Days

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 9

It seems every person on the planet has something to say about the passing of The Queen, which has brought sadness to all and the harsh realization that all good things do eventually come to an end, but if there is one thing we know about this amazing woman it’s that she loved horses and racing, so let’s take a look at the topical tips for Saturday.

The Queen meets 'our queen' Black Caviar at Royal Ascot.

Her own horse Chalk Stream (GB), who campaigns in Australia for Chris Waller, raced last Saturday and finished fourth in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup, so he’s not running this weekend, but the stable will send out the horse that is the obvious topical tip in Head of State.

An enigmatic four year-old with plenty of ability, Head of State is on the comeback trail from cardiac arrhythmia and is having his third run back from a spell in Race 4 over 1800m. A long shot in the race is Highland Rocker (Fr), who gets a mention due to The Queen’s well-known love of Scotland and in particular her Balmoral estate where she passed away surrounded by family.

The Listed VRC Cap D’Antibes Stakes throws up a quinella impossible to miss in Queen of the Ball and See You in Heaven…. At the Platinum Jubilee celebrations this year she was very much the ‘queen of the ball’.

Regal Power in the Group I VRC Makybe Diva Stakes will have his supporters, while Vow and Declare is looking to win for the first time since the 2019 Melbourne Cup in Race 6 at Flemington.

Lady of Honour in the Group II VRC Let’s Elope Stakes is not hard to find and Graceful Girl in the Group II VRC Bobbie Lewis harks back to the coronation when it all began in 1953 and the Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth as a girl of just 25.

The Group II ATC Run to the Rose features Political Debate and while The Queen was completely impartial and kept her politics to herself throughout her life, her passing will inevitably spark political debate in this country as our leaders grapple with the future and whether we move to become a republic or take King Charles III as our Head of State.

Sweet Ride was what The Queen loved best of all!

Also in the Run to the Rose is the topical tip I like the best and it’s Sweet Ride, I do hope somewhere on the other side of the rainbow bridge The Queen is back with those horses and people she loved through a lifetime of service.
