Valuable Mona Lisa Win for Meg

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 2

Bred in the purple, talented Sebring mare Meg gained a valuable Black Type win on Friday at Wyong when powering home out wide to snatch a last stride win in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m).

The Matthew Dale trained mare resumed from a spell with a good win at Randwick last month and had the services of Hugh Bowman for this Black Type assignment.

Drawn wide, Bowman allowed her to settle back in the field and she charged home out wide to nail the Godolphin duo of Katalin and Larkspur Run on the line with a well-timed run.

Meg has the tidy record of six wins and five placings from 19 starts with prizemoney in excess of $260,000 and will no doubt chase further Black Type.

“Being out wide with momentum looked to be the key and I got to thinking the wide barrier was an advantage, not a disadvantage,” said Matthew Dale.

“I thought if she could run second or third she’d run out of her skin, so to get up and win is very rewarding.

“Her coat still hasn’t cleaned up so there is good improvement to come. I think she looks to be a Group style mare over 1600m.”

Meg is a another SW bred and sold by Segenhoe.

Meg was a $440,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Segenhoe draft for New Zealand breeder Gary Harding and started her racing career in New Zealand before being sent to Australia and given to Matthew Dale to train.

She was bred by Segenhoe and is the first winner for Martilago, a winning encosta de Lago half-sister to Group I winner Charmont from stakes-winning Danehill (USA) mare Martique, a daughter of Group I winner Champagne.

Segenhoe sold a Merchant Navy colt from Martilago for $140,000 at Inglis Easter this year and she was covered last spring by So You Think.

Meg is the 77th stakes-winner for Widden Stud’s much missed Sebring.
