Guineas Contenders Running Today

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday August 23

The release of entries for the Group I Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas has added plenty of interest to competitive maiden events which are often the first stepping off point for potential contenders, so let’s take a look at the runners today that hold entries.

The first two races at Randwick are packed with contenders and one on particular is an interesting prospect in the Maher and Eustace trained Hellbent colt Warby, who has started just twice for a second in the Group III Canberra Black Opal Stakes to Queen of the Ball and then was unplaced in the Group I ATC Sires Produce Stakes on a very heavy track.

Warby was a $300,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Warby has had two trials to prepare for his return as has another promising colt in Zou Tiger, who has  finished second at his only two starts and is overdue for a win.

Warby is a half-brother to Group I ATC Champagne stakes winner Captivant, who  was also second in the Caulfield Guineas and Zou Tiger is a half-brother to last seasons multiple Group I winning filly Daisies and has NZ Horse of the Year Tycoon Lil as his third dam.

The first race at Sandown is also filled with interest and features loads of unraced or lightly raced horses including an expensive I Am Invincible colt trained by Peter Moody.

Garza Blanca was a $700,000 Magic Millions purchase.

$700,000 Magic Millions purchase Garza Blanca is from Mousai, a winning half-sister by Fastnet Rock to Caulfield Guineas winner Starspangledbanner and three-quarter sister-in-blood to MRC Thousand Guineas winner Amicus.

Pedigree certainly says Guineas hopeful, will be interested to see if race performance says likewise!

Deep Field colt Who Dares has had one run for a close second to subsequent stakes-winner Fast Witness, so on that basis is right in the mix.
