Mark Smith - Tuesday August 16

The Written Tycoon gelding Bencoolen defied a betting drift to make a winning career debut over 1204m at Donald on Tuesday and is entered for the Caulfield Guineas.

Ridden by Damian Lane for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, the son of Written Tycoon overpowered the sensationally backed Overshare gelding Gamadale Nip by two and three-quarter lengths with the Overshare filly Over 'N' Out a further three lengths back in third.

Lane said Bencoolen was the consummate professional.

“Very well educated and prepared as usual from this yard. He did everything I asked of him, and he was too good,” Lane said.

A $190,000 purchase from the Sledmere Stud consignment at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Bencoolen holds a nomination for the Caulfield Guineas.

Bred by Rob Roulston’s RIFA Mustang Pty Ltd, the son of Written Tycoon is the first foal of the unraced Stratum mare Stockton Image.
