€2 million Dubawi Colt Tops Day 3 at Arqana

Mark Smith, Breednet - Tuesday August 16

The third day of the August Yearling Sale continued the momentum of the first two days.

Marked by sustained demand at all levels, 86% of the 72 yearlings that went through the ring today were sold for an average price of €241,516, generating a turnover of €14,974,000.

Son of Dubawi makes top price on Day 3

The auditorium was buzzing when it came to the turn of a son of Dubawi out of Prix Minerve (Gr.3) scorer GOLDEN VALENTINE (lot 292) in the ring.

Anthony Stroud, bidding for Godolphin, had the final say at €2 million for the grandson of group winner GOLD ROUND from the excellent family of GOLDIKOVA.

He was consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux. “He’s an exceptional colt and a son of Dubawi,” said Anthony Stroud. “The whole team loved him - he was the horse of the sale for us - we’re delighted.”

Earlier in the day, the agent also signed the docket at €600,000 for another son of Dubawi (lot 259), once more offered from Ecurie des Monceaux. The agent had the final say for the colt, that is out of Listed winner DUBAI ROSE, that has already produced multiple group winner THE JULIET ROSE.

“He’s a lovely colt by Dubawi, a stallion that doesn’t need any introduction and with whom we have had a lot of success,” said Anthony Stroud. “His half-sister THE JULIET ROSE was a very good filly and he comes from a prestigious stud that breeds very good horses. He ticks all the boxes - all the team are very happy.” The agent also struck for a €575,000 son of Lope De Vega (lot 291) from Haras du Cadran.

The blue-blooded colt is a grandson of Group 1 winner GREY LILAS and is out of a sister to Classic winner GOLDEN LILAC and Group winner GREY LYON.

Son of Kingman makes €800,000

Buyers surrounded the ring to see lot 249, a son of Kingman from Haras de Saint Pair go under the hammer.

Bidding reached €800,000 for the half-brother to group winner GUILDSMAN, also from the family of classic winners ALMANZOR and DARJINA.

The colt was knocked down to Oliver St Lawrence, that was bidding on behalf of Fawzi Nass from Bahrein.

He said, “Andreas Putsch is a breeder that I have a lot of time for,” said the agent. “We loved this colt when we saw him. He’ll go to William Haggas, who was here this weekend and really liked him too.”

Daughter of Frankel for Charles Gordon-Watson

A few minutes earlier, Haras d’Etreham had offered a daughter of Frankel out of Listed winner CRYSTAL RIVER (lot 247).

Charlie Gordon-Watson had the final say at €650,000 for the well-bred filly from the family of Group 1 winners ROYAL MARINE, LIBRETTIST, DUBAI DESTINATION and AGNES WORLD.

After signing the docket, the agent said, “She’s a magnificent filly with a superb pedigree page. She’s a daughter of Frankel, a remarkable stallion that had a Group 1 and Group 3 winner just yesterday at Deauville, and her dam is by Dubawi, one of the best crosses that one could find.

She’ll go to England and we’ll decide on a trainer later.”

Son of Galileo for Coolmore and White Birch Farm

A son of Galileo out of group winner HIGH CELEBRITY (lot 297) was bought for €650,000 by Michel Zerolo (Oceanic Bloodstock) standing beside M.V. Magnier.

Offered by Haras des Capucines for Haras des Fresneaux, the colt is from the close family of multiple Grade 1 winner SURFSIDE and FLANDERS.

€600,000 for a sister to GLYCON

Very active around the ring during the three days when purchasing on behalf of Al Shira’aa Racing, Kieran Lalor struck once more today for a sister to triple group winner GLYCON (lot 287).

Consigned by Haras de Saint Pair, the daughter of the late Le Havre out of Listed winner and French 1000 Guineas (Gr.1) runner-up GLORIOUS SIGHT made €600,000.

The well-bred filly is from the family of Group 1 scorers THE UNITED STATES, HYDRANGEA and HERMOSA.

After signing the docket, Kieran Lalor, manager d’Al Shira’aa Racing, said, “I think that she was one of the nicest fillies in the sale. She’s out of a very good mare and by Le Havre, an incredible stallion. Her brother is a Group 2 winner and she comes from a stud that needs no introduction. Under her second dam she comes from one of the best families I know, which has a lot of Group 1 winners. It’s been a while that we have wanted to buy into this family - we’re very happy!”

An historic August Yearling Sale.

The 2022 edition of the August Sale recorded unprecedented results on all levels. Over the three days of the sale, 285 yearlings passed through the ring and 84% of them changed hands for an average price of €210,025, up 12% on the record edition of 2019.

The total turnover jumped by 18% compared to 2019 to reach €51,071,000.

Following the sale, Eric Hoyeau, President of ARQANA and Freddy Powell, Executive Director commented, “With such great results, we are more than satisfied that the yearling sales season is off to a great start. We are extremely grateful to our vendors for entrusting us with yearlings of this quality and for adapting to the new three-day format.

The entire catalogue was of exceptional quality and all the yearlings entered are qualified for the ARQANA Series, which will be held for the first time next year.

The return to normal compared to the last two years has allowed us to organise events that enable us to welcome our clients, who came from Japan, the United States, Europe, the Gulf, Australia, etc., and we thank them for having attended.

It was a real pleasure to see everyone in Deauville and we look forward to seeing you at the beginning of September.”

Ecurie des Monceaux was the leading vendors for the 11th consecutive year.
