Maurice Colt Stakes Spring Claim

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday August 10

Maurice (Jpn) colt Matcha Latte showed good potential in his first campaign with a third to Williamsburg in the Group III ATC Schweppervescence from just three starts and he resumed from a spell at Randwick on Wednesday to score a stylish maiden win.

Some promising three year-olds stepped out in the 1300m maiden with Tom Sherry keeping Matcha Latte out of trouble to surge home and win by a neck with well fancied first starter Perfect Thought cluttered  up on the fence and untested.

A $150,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Arrowfield draft for Viribright Racing, Matcha Latte is entered for the Caulfield Guineas with several other stakes races in Sydney this spring also on his agenda.

Matcha Latte was bred and sold by Arrowfield Stud.

“He’s always been an above average colt, he showed good ability in the autumn and has matured nicely so I’m sure once we get him out to a mile plus he’ll be better again,” said Mark Newnham

“He’ll head towards races like the Gloaming and hopefully end up in the Spring Champion Stakes (G1).

“You can see in his coat he still has good improvement to come, but it’s nice to get that maiden win out of the way.”

Bred by Arrowfield, Matcha Latte is bred on the same cross as Maurice’s triple Group I winner Hitotsu being the second winner from unraced Redoute’s Choice mare Wayward, a half-sister to Caulfield Cup winner Tawqeet.

It’s a quality European female family packed with Black Type, so Matcha Latte is certainly bred to make his presence felt as a classic type three year-old.

Maurice is back at Arrowfield this spring at a fee of $82,500.
