One to Watch – Cranbourne

Tara Madgwick - Thursday July 21

Purchased for $700,000 from the 2021 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, this expensive son of Shalaa (IRE) broke the ice at Cranbourne on Thursday.

Trained by Matt Laurie, Shalaman turned in a good debut back in April when finishing second to subsequent Group II VRC Sires Produce Stakes winner Let’srollthedice at Bendigo.

He disappointed at his next run in the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush before heading for a spell and was tuned up for his return with a good recent trial.

Shalaman finished off with a good turn of foot to win by the 1000m juvenile maiden by  a length under Ben Melham.

Bred and offered for sale by Yulong, Shalaman was bought by Bahen Bloodstock Ltd / Matt Laurie Racing and was the equal third highest priced yearling at Inglis Premier in 2021.

Shalaman was a $700,000 Inglis Premier purchase.

He is the second winner from Our Daisy, a metro winning Commands mare from the family of Group I winners Emerald Dream, Shooting to Win and Luna Rossa.

Shalaman is the 14th 2YO winner this season for Arrowfield stud shuttler Shalaa and three of those winners are stakes-winners – Seven Veils, Semillion and Quang Tri, while his Group II placed colt Shalatin may ultimately be the best of them all.

The Joe Pride trained colt trialled nicely at Hawkesbury earlier this week and could easily make his presence felt in the early spring stakes races for  three year-olds.
