Aquis Farm’s Kobayashi is the sire of smart filly Midnight in Tokyo, who powered home from back in the field to win the open juvenile event at Randwick on Saturday.

Trained by Kacy Fogden, Midnight in Tokyo was a close second in the Group III Ken Russell Memorial Classic in May before finishing sixth at her first run in Sydney last month.

Ridden quietly by Sam Clipperton, Midnight in Tokyo charted a path between runners and swept to the lead with 100m to run going on to win by half a length.

“We've always had a very big opinion of her," Fogden said.

"I thought it mapped a little bit awkwardly (on Saturday) but I didn't see her being that far back in that position, but Sam (Clipperton) was patient with her and luckily the gaps opened up.

"I think she is going to be a really nice autumn filly.

"I don't know how much longer we will truly get out of her this preparation, she has been up a long time."

With two wins and a second from four starts, Midnight in Tokyo has won over $137,000 in prizemoney and is an Aquis homebred. She is the second winner from Orabelle, a winning three-quarter -sister by Casino Prince to stakes-winner All Too Royal from Group I winner Bel Mer.

Orabelle was sold in the 2021 Inglis Digital March (Late) Sale for $1,000 and was sent to Kobayashi again last spring by her new owner.

Orabelle sold for $160,000 at the MM National Broodmare Sale this year.

She was then offered at 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in the Blue Sky Premium Consignment after Midnight in Tokyo had gained Black Type and being in foal to her sire on an early cover made $160,000! She is now based in the Hunter Valley with Parsons Creek.

A lightly raced Listed winner at two by champion sire I Am Invincible, Kobayashi has sired two winners stands at Aquis at a fee of $8,800 this spring.
