Better Than Ready has carved out a considerable niche for himself in Queensland as a phenomenal source of precocious juveniles and with 17 2YO winners this season the brilliant near black son of More Than Ready (USA) is the leading sire in Australia by 2YO winners.
He’s also recently become a Group I sire with his quality older son Apache Chase taking out the Group I BRC Kingsford Smith Cup.
The other sires in this price bracket with runners are Xtravagant, Rebel Dane and Star Turn, whose oldest progeny are 3YO’s and Royal Ascot hero Merchant Navy, whose oldest progeny are 2YO’s and include five winners.
Rebel Dane has shot to fame this year on the back of Golden Slipper winner and Champion 2YO elect Fireburn, while Xtravagant has had four stakes-winners this season including Group II winner Lavish Girl and $2million Inglis Millennium winner Xtravagant Star.
Star Turn has had two stakes-winners this season and one of them Cordyceps Six is in Hong Kong while his 3YO filly Startantes has not won a stakes race, but having twice placed at Group I level, she lays claim to being his best horse to date.
Fourth season sire Written By will have his first runners next season with his first yearlings selling well this year, while Castelvecchio is lining up for his third season so will have his first yearlings selling in 2023.
Third season sire Castelvecchio has had a small number of weanlings sell at recent sales with four selling for $100,000 or more with his best result $160,000 for a colt from Wynnstay Avenue at Magic Millions.

First and Second Season
This price bracket features four first season sires Captivant (Capitalist), Portland Sky (Deep Field), Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice) and Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal) with 2020 European Horse of the Year Ghaiyyath (IRE) (Dubawi) returning for a second season.
By champion sire Dubawi, Ghaiyyath is the best racehorse in this group by a country mile and has an elite pedigree being from Group I winning Galileo mare Nightime, but he was essentially a middle distance horse that excelled at four and five with injury restricting his 3YO season to just one start for a win.
Captivant is the first son to go to stud of Golden Slipper winning sire Capitalist and was a Group I winner at two of the ATC Champagne Stakes (1600m) and was also second in a vintage renewal of the Caulfield Guineas splitting Anamoe and Artorius.
Portland Sky is the first son to go to stud of Deep Field and got his Group I win with a dead heat victory in the MRC Oakleigh Plate (1100m) sharing the win with Celebrity Queen.
Extreme Warrior is among the first sons to go to stud of Extreme Choice and delivered his best performance when blitzing his rivals to win the Group III MRC Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at three.
Victor Ludorum was a Group I winner at two of the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (1600m) and the Group I Deauville Poule d'Essai des Poulains (1600m) at three and has an interesting pedigree as he is by Shamardal from a mare from the family of Shamardal so he has a 3 x 3 double cross blue hen Helen Street.
