No Nay Never's Madame Pommery Breaks Maiden in Style

Mark Smith - Saturday May 21

A battling sixth at Rosehill when on debut in January, Madame Pommery showed an appreciation for a break when routing eight opponents in the Precise Fire Hcp (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Ridden by Jay Ford for Chris Waller, the daughter of No Nay Never revelled in the heavy conditions to defeat the David Payne-trained Mikki Isle (JPN) gelding Dark Harmony by three and a quarter lengths.

The winner’s better-fancied stablemate was a further half neck back in third. The $1 million son of Not A Single Doubt chimed in like the winner at the 250m before struggling to extend in the demanding conditions.

“She has always shown ability and was good enough to race as an early two-year-old,” Waller said.

“They are a good group of owners who have been patient and will be very excited.

‘She was one of our horses that race pre-Slipper because we thought a bit of her. She has done everything right since and has a bright future.

“She got through the ground OK, which was a big plus. I thought Northern Beaches was going to go straight past her, but when the pressure came on, he struggled in the going, and she excelled.

Madame Pommery was a $150,000 purchase by Waller Racing/Mulcaster Bloodstock from the Coolmore Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

She is the third winner from four to race from the winning Exceed And Excel mare Cancel, a sister to Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner and Golden Slipper runner-up Earthquake and Listed winner Palomares (Commands).

James Harron Bloodstock purchased Cancel out of the Godolphin consignment at the 2016 National Broodmare Sale. She was back in the same ring two years later when purchased by Coolmore from the Newgate draft when carrying a colt by Capitalist.

Marsh Racing bought a Pierro colt out of Cancel for $200,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Cancel was covered by Wootton Bassett (GB) last spring.
