One to Watch – Cranbourne

Tara Madgwick - Friday May 13

Yulong have had some good results with champion sire Frankel, who has given them dual Group I winner Hungry Heart and Group III winner My Whisper as well as a very promising filly that won at Cranbourne on Friday evening.

Trained by Peter Moody and ridden by Jamie Kah, Madrean was an odds on favourite for the 1400m maiden and won in good style by a length eased down.

She was a good thing beaten on debut when second at Mornington last month, but made no mistakes this time.

Madrean was passed in by Yulong shy of her reserve at Inglis Easter and retained to race, but looks to have a bright future.

“She was strong to the line and gives us every indication she will get further,” said stable representative Katherine Coleman.

“We’ve always really liked her, but she’s not an overly big filly so has taken a lot of time to get here. We’ve been patient and it’s nice to see that patience rewarded.”

Madrean is the first winner for Sky Island (IRE), an unraced half-sister by High Chaparral to Group II winner Maraahel from a family packed with Black Type.

Yulong sold a yearling colt by Grunt from Sky Island at Inglis Premier this year for $60,000 to John Foote Bloodstock and she produced a filly last year by Alabama Express and is back in foal to him again.

Madrean is the 36th winner in Australia by Frankel, who has a great record in this country with 10 stakes-winners here to his credit.
