Mark Smith - Tuesday May 3

Newsells Park Stud has reported that the remarkable broodmare Shastye died just hours after foaling a Dubawi colt.

Shastye is the dam of Group 1 winning brothers Japan and Mogul, Group II Middleton Stakes winner Secret Gesture, Group III winner Sir Issac Newton, and Maurus (Medicean), a dual Listed winner of almost $700,000 in Australia.

Bought by Klaus J Jacobs and John Warren for 625,000gns at the 2005 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, the 21yo daughter of Danehill was a sale ring phenomenon. It would not surprise if Tattersalls devoted a wing to her.

The Shastye Honour Roll

Shabyt - filly by Sadler's Wells (USA) purchased by Jeremy Noseda for 350,000gns.

Secret Gesture - filly by Galileo (IRE) a 230,000gns buyback at Tattersalls in 2011, Secret Gesture bought by John Ferguson for US$3,500,000 at Keeneland in 2016.

Sir Isaac Newton - colt by Galileo (IRE) was a 360,000gns purchase for MV Magnier at Tattersalls 2013.

Secret Soul - filly by Street Cry (IRE) was an 800,000gns purchase for Charlie Gordon-Watson at Tattersalls 2015.

Secret Gaze filly by Galileo (IRE) went the way of David Redvers for 1,350,000gns at Tattersalls 2016.

Japan – colt by Galileo (IRE) fell to the might of Coolmore with MV Magnier/Mayfair/P&R Doyle shelling out 1,300,000gns at Tattersalls 2017.

Mogul - colt by Galileo (IRE), MV Magnier back in action again at Tattersalls 2018, but this time had to shell out 3,400,000gns.

Skylark – filly by Galileo (IRE), Magnier strikes again when parting with another 3,400,000gns at Tattersalls 2020.

Newsells honoured Shastye in a prepared statement.

"The exploits of her progeny, most notably formed from her wonderful partnership with the extraordinary Galileo, gave us all the most unforgettable moments, whether they came amid the silence of a hushed sales ring, or accompanied by the roar of the crowd at Epsom, York, Longchamp or Sha Tin.

"When Newsells Park Stud was put up for sale at the end of 2020, it was Shastye that stood out more than any other mare to prove what was achievable.

"Shastye put Newsells Park Stud back on the map, made the stud commercially successful and helped to attract a new, considerate, enthusiastic and passionate owner in Graham Smith-Bernal to take on the custodianship of the stud for another generation. Rest in peace you wonderful, wonderful lady."
