Godolphin Win G1 2,000 Guineas with Homebred Coroebus

Tara Madgwick - Saturday April 30

Godolphin have had a hot start to the European flat season and were expected to win the Group I 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket overnight with the hot favourite Native Trail, but he had to settle for second behind stablemate Coroebus with Coolmore entry Luxembourg in third place,

Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by James Doyle, Coroebus was having his first run for the year following a promising 2YO season that produced two wins and a second with victory in the Group III Newmarket Autumn Stakes (1m) the highlight.

Coroebus scored a three-quarter length over gallant Native Trail, with Camelot colt Luxembourg recovering from a stumble at the start to run super well cementing his place as favourite for the Epsom Derby.

“Coroebus is a Dubawi - I'm not saying we're spoilt but I'd like to think I know the Dubawi's by now,” said Charlie Appleby.

“We've had enough of them through our hands and he's shown us all the right signs. This horse has always shown like any good horse natural pace and when they have that natural pace in the physique he has you can't do nothing apart from get excited about it.

“It is a nice discussion to have with the team but I would let this horse go straight to the St James's Palace Stakes.”

Coroebus is the third 2,000 Guineas winner for Dubawi joining Night of Thunder and Makfi and is his 49th Group I winner.

At age 20, Dubawi has had success as a sire of sires and Darley will stand two of his best young sons in Australia this spring in Too Darn Hot (GB) and Ghaiyyath (IRE).

Coroebus is the first winner for Group III winning Teofilo mare First Victory, a sibling to two time Group I Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow, Group winners Ihtimal and Eastern World, plus stakes-winners Always Smile and Winter Lightning.

Like legendary sire Galileo, Dubawi shuttled to Australia at the start of his stud career and over time has built an amazing career as the sire of 227 stakes-winners worldwide at 15.6% SW to runner with his winner to runner rate over 75%.

Coreobus is the second Group I winner for Teofilo as a broodmare sire joining Irish 2,000 Guineas winner MacSwiney.
