Arrowfield Announce 2022 Fees

Media Release - Wednesday April 20

Arrowfield Stud has today announced the fees for the nine stallions on its roster for the 2022 Australian breeding season.

Arrowfield’s Chairman John Messara says, “Australian breeders have thrived in the unusual circumstances of the past two years with record yearling sales and prizemoney driving great enthusiasm for our sport and major investment in our industry.

“Nevertheless, our feet stay firmly on the ground with fees that we believe will encourage breeders to join Arrowfield in the thrilling quest for racetrack and sale-ring success.”

Four-time Champion Sire Snitzel, enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, returns to his pre-covid fee of $220,000 inc. GST. His 16 stakeswinners in 2021/22, including Group 1 winners In The Congo, Wild Ruler & Yearning, and his career-high $717,708 Inglis Easter average confirm his status as a compelling option for elite mares. Snitzel’s 2022 book will be strictly limited.

Leading Second Season Sire Maurice will stand at a new fee of $82,500 inc. GST in the wake of his breakthrough season, headed by triple Group 1 Classic winner Hitotsu, exciting 3YO sprinter Mazu and 29 other Australian winners. Maurice’s major sale yearlings (sold at Magic Millions and Inglis Classic, Premier & Easter) averaged $195,212 with 13 making $250,000 or more, and a top price of $500,000 achieved at Inglis Easter.

Shalaa, whose 34 Australian winners from two crops this season include Group-winning 2YOs Semillion & Seven Veils, will be offered at $33,000 inc. GST. Shalaa’s 53 major sale yearlings averaged 5.7 times that fee with a top price of $500,000.

Castelvecchio, distinguished by his Group 1 victories at both two & three, will stand at a slightly reduced third season fee of $27,500 inc. GST. He covered 248 mares in his first two books and likely headliners among his first foals include a colt out of Miss Finland (Champion & dam of G1 winner Stay With Me) and a filly out of Love Is Fickle (dam of 3-time G1 winner Hitotsu).

The fees for the other five stallions on Arrowfield’s 2022 roster are unchanged.

Dundeel remains at $66,000 inc. GST and continues to build an imposing career record, thanks to exceptional breeder support and 10 stakes performers this season, including four at Group 1 level. Buyers responded with an average spend of more than $240,000 for his 89 major sale yearlings, among them his first-ever seven-figure lots, a filly and a colt sold for $1.7 million and $1 million at Inglis Easter.

The marketplace has warmly welcomed the first crop of 5-time Group 1 winner The Autumn Sun whose fee remains at $66,000 inc. GST. His 72 major sale yearlings averaged $300,000 with top prices of $950,000, $925,000 and $900,000 achieved at Magic Millions and Karaka. Their trainers will include almost every leading stable in the country and they will be racing as four-year-olds when the foals conceived this year are offered for sale.

Japan’s unbeaten Champion 2YO Colt and three-time Group 1 winner Admire Mars returns for his second season at a fee of $22,000 inc. GST. Breeders who support him have every reason to share Arrowfield’s confidence in him, given the local success of fellow Japanese stars Maurice (Leading 2nd Season Sire) and Real Impact (second, 3rd Season Sires’ list).

The fee for Group-winning 2YO & 3YO Pariah remains at $16,500 inc. GST in the wake of an encouraging start by his first 2YOs, including stakes performers Swiss Exile & Runaway Belle, and a $136,533 major sale average for 30 second-crop yearlings. They include 7 lots brought for $200,000 or more by Annabel Neasham, Bahen Bloodstock & Kris Lees, Tony Gollan & John Foote, Darby Racing, Robert & Luke Price, James Harron and Vinery Stud.

Snitzel’s dual Group-winning son Showtime remains at a fee of $11,000 inc. GST and is upholding the Arrowfield tradition of stallions that out-perform their bottom-of-the-roster spot, with 20 first-crop yearlings averaging almost 8 times his fee at major 2022 sales. That includes 7 lots sold for $100,000 or more, and top prices of $230,000 (filly bought by Malua Bloodstock) and $200,000 (colt sold to Richard & Chantelle Jolly). The rise of Snitzel’s sire sons Shamus Award and Russian Revolution is a further boost for Showtime’s prospects.
