Success Looks Like This

Long regarded as one of the most successful names in Australian bloodstock, Tyreel Stud is flourishing under the ownership of Linda and Laurence Monds, who purchased the picturesque thoroughbred nursery at Agnes Banks in 2014.

“We have been overwhelmed by the encouragement and acceptance over the past eight years by our breeding and racing industry,” said Linda Monds.

Linda Monds of Tyreel Stud

“It was never going to be easy starting a new commercial business midway through your life in an industry filled with highly respected generations of families that have owned and operated their breeding establishments for many decades and in some cases century’s.

“We were given an opportunity with a parcel of land and then had to create our own business.”

The paddocks of Tyreel Stud are a proven source of quality thoroughbreds.

Linda and Laurence Monds changed the day to day running of the farm and invested significantly in quality breeding stock with the results of their planning and management strategy now delivering a new era of success for Tyreel Stud.

They surrounded themselves with passionate and dedicated people including Stud Manager, Rob Sims, who has been there from day one and skilled yearling managers over the course of the past eight years with that role currently filled by Vanessa Benson, who started with Tyreel in May 2019.

Stud Manager Rob Sims has been with the Linda and Laurence Monds from the beginning.

Along with the dedicated team based at the farm, Tyreel have also been supported enormously by renowned vet Dr Ian Duckworth and farrier Andrew Atkins.

“I believe it is the combination of good people and investing in well researched bloodstock and matings, combined with well-balanced nutrition and attention to detail that gives our bloodstock every chance to succeed,” Monds said.

“After they leave our care the control is gone, but one thing I know is that our horses have had a good solid foundation in the best possible environment that we can give them.”

The list of successful horses bred/ raised or consigned by Tyreel Stud under the Monds ownership is impressive and is headed by Group I winners Montefilia, Behemoth, Rocket Spade and of course Everest hero Classique Legend, the highest rated sprinter in the world in 2020.

$9million earner Classique Legend was bred and sold by Tyreel Stud.

Add in Group and stakes-winning horses like Tiger of Malay, Aethero, Parry Sound, Every Rose, Wild Vixen, Snickerdoodledandy and this season’s stakes-placed 2YO Bohemian Daisy and a picture is being painted of a stud that is achieving sustained and consistent success.

“Our ambitions were always modest and we marked success subtly,” Monds revealed.

“Success is measured in many ways. We believed that success was being able to pay the bills, employ and reward loyal staff, breed nice horses that would go on to achieve the best they possibly can for their new owners, whether that be city or country racing, while laying down the best foundations we could in providing a safe and happy environment for our horses and for everyone who works with us.

“Never did we expect to have the consistent success we have had in the sales ring and on the track, those dreams were achieved by other people, not us.

“The sales companies and the people who have invested in our horses have trust in our product and that speaks volumes to us and our team.

“Our WH brand (which is my Mum and Dad’s original brand, Wallings Holdings) is now crossing the finish line on many occasions first and that completely blows my mind, our babies are doing us proud!”

Lot 99 Colt Hellbent x Catalonia, by Flying Spur

From the second crop of exciting young I Am Invincible son Hellbent and is a three-quarter brother to brilliant 2YO stakes-winner Espaaniyah, who was also bred and sold by Tyreel Stud, fetching $750,000 at this sale in 2018 when bought by Emirates Park.

This female family has also been making news with Group III ATC Magic Night Stakes winner She’s Extreme popping into the pedigree as she has the same third dam, Road to Glory, as this colt.

‘A powerfully built colt, great strength through his hips, a precocious colt who looks like he will go early from a proven family of two-year-old speed.’

Lot 172 Colt Lope De Vega x Fleet of Foot, by Toorak Toff

Conceived in the Northern Hemisphere by outstanding sire Lope de Vega, this colt is a three-quarter brother-in-blood to Champion Sprinter and five time Group I winner Santa Ana Lane, a winner of $8.2 million in prizemoney.

‘An imposing colt who fills the eye, a great loose moving horse who is bred on the same cross as Santa Ana Lane.’

Lot 340 Colt Deep Field x Passarelle, by Not a Single Doubt

Half-brother to Group III placed Shebringzit, who was also fourth in the Group I SA Derby and comes from a black Type family featuring Group winners Silverstream, Speedy Natalie and Sweet and Speedy.

Bred on successful Deep Field x Redoute’s Choice nick that has produced G2 winners Al Muthana and Dig Deep.

‘A striking colt with great flashy markings, he will catch the eye on the sales ground.  Flashy looks aside he is very strong and correct and moves with great purpose and by a sire who is commanding a great following both in Australia and overseas.’

Lot 348 Filly I Am Invincible x Pinocchio, by Encosta de Lago

Half-sister to Everest hero and $9.3million winner Classique Legend and HK Group II winner Aethero from exceptional producer Pinocchio, a winning sister to Champion Miler Racing to Win that has had three foals to race all winners.

I Am Invincible has a great affinity with Encosta de Lago and they combine in the pedigrees of 10 stakes-winners headed by last week's Group I winning filly Imperatriz and Group I placed Group II winning sprinter Libertini, who also has a double cross of Bletchingly as does this filly.

‘A show stopping filly who combines steely good looks and a great athletic physique.  Her half-brothers have been sensational and this being the only female from the family to be offered for sale provides an extremely unique opportunity for buyers.’

Lot 389 Filly Shamus Award x Royal Raine (NZ), by Thorn Park

The only filly in the sale by Cox Plate winner Shamus Award, sire of current G1 stars Incentivise and Duais and is a half-sister to this season’s stakes-placed 3YO filly Decent Raine, a good recent fourth in the Group II MRC Angus Armanasco Stakes.

From the family of Group I Adelaide Cup winner The A Train and Group III Newcastle Gold Cup winner Stratofortress, Oaks filly?

‘A tough filly with a very strong mind who loves her work.  A horse who moves with purpose and will attract the eyes of many trainers.’

Lot 437 Filly Zoustar x Sous La Terre, by Pierro

Second foal of an unraced half-sister to Group III winner Solar Charged and is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Champion 3YO Filly Sunlight, a triple Group I winner of $6.5million, and Group III winner Sisstar.

The full sister to this  filly sold for $550,000 at Magic Millions last year to Kitchwin Hills and has been named Terrestar with Team Hawkes to train.

‘A very mature, balanced filly who looks ready to race.  She has a great action which leads us to believe she has all it takes to add to her already illustrious pedigree.’

Lot 467 Filly Pierro x Thai Noon (GB), by Dansili

Half-sister to progressive Frankel mare Steinem, who won the Group III MRC Summoned Stakes last spring and was a fast closing third in the Group III ATC Birthday Card Stakes last Saturday. She has Group I aspirations with the ATC Queen of the Turf Stakes next on her agenda.

Her second dam is a Listed winner, as is her third dam, while her fourth dam is the French Champion 2YO Filly and Group I winner Miss Tahiti, dam of Group I winner Miss France (Dansili).

‘An athletic filly who is very light on her feet, she moves very sweetly and brings a very European influence to the mix, all this combined she is an exciting prospect.’
