Black Sail Dominant in CS Hayes

Mark Smith - Monday March 14

Rejuvenated gelding Black Sail opened his stakes account at the ripe old age of seven, going coast to coast under Harry Coffey in Monday’s Listed CS Hayes Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville.

Coming off a win over the same track and distance on February 26, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained son of Savabeel opened up to defeat Royal Mile (Danerich) by two lengths with Farooq (Frankel) a long-head back in third.

A $170,000 purchase for Moody Racing Pty Ltd / First Light Racing / Paul Willetts Bloodstock, from the Phoenix Broodmare Farm draft at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Black Sail advances his record to eight wins, seven seconds and five thirds from 47 starts with earnings of $478,570.

“He’s a marvellous horse and has been great for First Light and connections, so delighted to get the win for them," stable representative Sam White said.

“He has really found his groove this time in and got a peach there by Harry.

“First Light have been strong supporters of the stable.”

Their imported dam Ennerdale (Singspiel) has a weanling colt by Fastnet Rock and visited Merchant Navy last spring.

Black Sail becomes the 126th stakes-winner for Waikato Stud’s multiple champion stallion Savabeel.
