Melbourne Cup Winner Retires to Stud in Ireland

Tara Madgwick - Friday February 25

2017 Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling (IRE) has found a home at stud and will stand at William Fox’s Kenmare Castle Stud in Ireland this year as a National Hunt sire.

The son of High Chaparral was trained by Joseph O’Brien and won the Melbourne Cup for a partnership involving Lloyd and Nick Williams as well as many other Aussie owners.

"I would have been involved in stallions over the years with Longford House Stud, having shares in them, and I was looking for a High Chaparral horse to cover a mare that I have who is a half-sister to Khalifa Sat," William Fox told UK Racing Post .

"I started inquiring about Rekindling and the best way to find out is to pick up the phone, so I rang Joseph O'Brien and asked him where the horse was.

"He told me that the horse was still with him and it took off from there. He spoke with Lloyd Williams and his team in Australia and they were happy for the horse to go to stud here."

Rekindling had 12 starts for four wins and two seconds and is a full brother to Group III winner Golden Sword, who was also second in the Group I Irish Derby.

Sons of High Chaparral have proven highly successful at stud and include So You Think, Dundeel and Toronado (IRE).
