Tragic Loss for Trelawney Stud

Media Release - Tuesday February 15

Trelawney Stud have tragically lost their Group Two winner Pareanui Bay after a paddock accident.

RIP Pareanui Bay.

The Trelawney Stud bred and raced gelding was a winner of three of his five starts, including the Gr.2 James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (1400m) and Listed Trevor and Corallie Eagle Memorial (1500m).

He placed in his other two raceday appearances, running second in the Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m) and Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1400m).

Trelawney Stud’s Brent Taylor said they were devastated by the loss of the talented three-year-old son of Lonhro.

“It is a tragic thing to have happened,” he said. “Not only was he a fantastic racehorse but he had a great character and had a lovely nature. He was well-loved in the stable and we were looking forward to the future with him and seeing him live out his time at Trelawney.

“We’d like to thank Tony Pike, Chris McNab and all the staff at the stable especially Parenaui Bay’s groom Caroline Kennedy who took such great care of him. Everyone here on the farm are also devastated, he meant a lot to everyone and we got great joy seeing him race and taking care of him.

“The team at Cambridge Equine Hospital have also been great, Rob Hitchcock and Alanna Zantingh, trying to find a solution but unfortunately despite their best efforts nothing could be done and the decision had to be made.”

Pareanui Bay is out of Flying Spur mare Okahu Bay who won the Gr.3 South Australian Fillies Classic (2500m) and comes from a family that includes Gr.1 Easter Handicap (1600m) winner Calveen.

Trelawney Stud will offer a Savabeel half-sister at Karaka next month where she will go through the sales ring as lot 459 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Book 1 Sale. - NZ RAcing Desk
