Revered Thompson takes riding record to new heights

Tom Walter - Monday September 25

Australian racing's most prolific jockey Robert Thompson has passed yet another milestone after posting a treble at Cessnock on Monday.

Thompson's second winner at the meeting, the Jason Deamer-trained Latin Light, represented his 4300th career win – at the age of 59.

It is a tally that no other Australian or New Zealand jockey in history has come close to.

An inductee into the Racing's Hall Of Fame and recipient of an Order of Australian Medal in 2015, Thompson has become the quintessential elder statesman of the New South Wales riding ranks.

But on the international stage, Thompson's incredible record pales in comparison to that of American-based jockey Russell Baze, who retired last year with 12,842 wins at the age of 57.

Meanwhile, Andrew Gibbons has sustained an injury to his right foot after his mount Rubel made contact with the running rail over the concluding stages of the fifth race at Cessnock.
