Ribchester Off The Mark with a Good One

Mark Smith - Saturday January 22

Godolphin’s 4-time Group 1 winner Ribchester (IRE) is off the mark in the southern hemisphere with a filly that could play a major part over the Golden Slipper carnival.

The James Cummings-trained Plymstock was the consummate professional at her career debut over 1000m at Randwick on Saturday.

With Tim Clark in the saddle, Plymstock raced midfield before hitting the line strongly to defeat the Deep Field filly Deep Expectation by a length with the I Am Invincible colt Emperor a short-neck back in third.

The favourite Wild Calm (American Pharoah) powered home from last on the turn to be beaten a length and a half in fifth.

“She’s done a really good job on debut,” Cummings said.

“She has plenty of pace, a speedy filly and like a lot of these two-year-olds she is still growing and putting it altogether.

“She is Trekking’s half-sister and notches up a win for Ribchester (IRE), a very interesting young stallion on our roster.

“The Ribchester’s that we’ve trialled so far have been showing us things, which is impressive for a stallion who will undoubtably get stock that improve as spring three-year-olds and get a lot further than five furlongs. There is a lot of two-year-old quality about them which is a good sign in Sydney and Melbourne where it is so strong.

“She is nominated for all the good races, which we will give consideration. As long as she keeps thriving and heading in the right way we will keep raising the bar.

“I can see her running in a good race that’s for sure.

“Her half-brother ran in the Golden Slipper, but it all became a bit much for him on that occasion but is a multiple Group 1 winner now.

“She is a valuable filly for us and the farm so I think we will tread carefully. It will be interesting to see when we put a little more pressure on her.”

Plymstock is the third winner from the first four foals of the Redoute’s Choice mare Outdoor whose broodmare career could not have started any better as the dam of the top-class Trekking (Street Cry).

The winner of the Group 1 BRC Stradbroke Handicap and Group 1 SAJC Goodwood Handicap, Trekking has been the backbone of the Godolphin operation for six seasons in which time he has contributed $5.8 million to the coffers.

Outdoor is a daughter of the Champion 3YO filly in Australia in 2006, Serenade Rose.

A daughter of Stravinsky (USA), Serenade Rose won the Group 1 VRC Oaks, Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks and Group 1 STC Arrowfield Stud Stakes.

She had just three foals before her death in November 2011.

Outdoor has a yearling filly by Street Boss (USA). Given a year off in 2020, she visited Street Boss (USA) again in 2021.

Ribchester (IRE) stood two seasons at Darley in 2018 and 2019. The son of Iffraaj struggled for patronage with just 35 foals in each of those two crops.

The Champion European Miler replaced his top-class sire Iffraaj  at Haunui Farm in 2020.
