Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Monday January 17

Four heats for juveniles at the Rosehill trials on Monday morning and two of those were won by the progeny of Written Tycoon, the sire of unbeaten Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Coolangatta.

Richard and Michael Freedman would be well pleased with the effort of unraced Tragara, who was third at her only previous trial back in October and has obviously made good progress since then.

A big filly, she was allowed to settle early by Tommy Berry and was near last turning for home, but unwound a good finish to surge home and win by a long neck running away.

A James Harron Bloodstock purchase from Inglis Classic for $380,000, Tragara runs for a syndicate that includes Segenhoe in whose colours she runs and is the second foal from Group III placed Charge Forward mare Ariaz, a grand-daughter of Group III winner Shelbourne Lass.

The second heat winner for Written Tycoon was Spendthrift Farm’s highly regarded colt Pyrois, who has now won both of his trials for Team Hawkes.

He raced midfield for Tommy Berry and wasn’t comfortable when eased off the heels of a runner in front of him, but when allowed to find his rhythm out wide he found the line well to score ove ra couple of well bred Snitzel colts.

Pyrois was the most expensive yearling sold in 2021 by Written Tycoon and is his most expensive colt ever. He was bred and sold by Emirates Park at the Magic Millions and is a half-brother to three minor winners from Taqaseem, a placed half-sister by Medaglia D’Oro (USA) to Group I winner Sense of Occasion from the Asawir branch of the famed Easy Date family.

A homebred for the Ingham family, Churchill (IRE) colt Robusto finished fourth in his first race start in the Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial in the spring and was having his second trial this preparation here.

He did everything right and was well held together to score a narrow win.

Robusto is from Group III winning Redoute’s Choice mare She’s Clean, a half-sister to the dam of d dual Group I winner Nettoyer and three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group I winners Absolutely and Abbey Marie.

The second heat for fillies featured a couple of proven performers in winner Ojai and Gimcrack placed Drisana, who were second and third in a close finish to Troach, who was down the track at her only start behind Ojai in the Kirkham Plate at Randwick in October.

Both place-getters trialled super and the winner may well have more to offer on race day than she showed on debut.

A Godolphin homebred, Troach is by Epaulette from former slick juvenile Group III winner Anise, a grand-daughter of blue hen Twiglet.
