So You Think Stayer Wins January Cup

Tara Madgwick - Saturday January 8

If ever a horse deserved to win a stakes race it’s seven year-old gelding So You Win, who has been a regular fixture in the Chris Waller stable for his whole career and scored his first Black Type victory in the Listed ATC January Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Stakes-placed on multiple occasions, he got the job done under a well timed ride for Sam Clipperton, closing late to shade his stable mate Mubariz (GB) to win by a short neck.

So You Win has compiled the admirable record of nine wins and 14 placings from 46 starts earning over $885,000 in prizemoney.

“He’s a very consistent gelding for the owners and for the stable,” said stable representative Damien Fitton.

“He never runs a bad race.”

Bred by Colm Santry, So You Win was a $220,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase for his trainer from the Hallmark Stud draft and is the best of four winners from Rhode Island Red (USA), a half-sister to US Group I winner Habibti.

Rhode Island Red was on-sold and bought by Bert Vieira from the 2015 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $100,000 and sadly died in 2020 after producing a colt by Trapeze Artist.

So You Win is the 38th stakes-winner for So You Think and is his fifth in Australia this season.
