Snitzel Filly Breaks her Maiden in Style

Mark Smith - Wednesday January 5

The Snitzel filly Duchy Of Savoy did what punters expected her to do, demolish a field of three-year-old maidens over 1000m at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday.

Jye McNeil wasn't interested in getting in a speed battle with the early leader Better Than Flying on the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained filly.

When Better Than Flying put up the white flag at the 300m, Duchy Of Savoy was ready to pounce.

Under a minimum of urging, the daughter of Snitzel defeated the Cable Bay (IRE) gelding Heir Apparent by three and a half lengths with a further long neck back to the fast-finishing Toronado (IRE) filly Mianado in third.

It was the first win at start five for Duchy Of Savoy, who debuted with a close-up fourth behind Dosh in the Group III Blue Diamond Preview almost 12 months ago.

Carrying the colours of Glentree Racing, Duchy Of Savoy was in the draft that Arrowfield withdrew from the 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

She is the second foal of the smart racemare Saavoya (Savabeel), winner of the Group II ARC Royal Stakes and Group II Eight Carat Classic.

Saavoya was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock for just $22,000 at the 2013 Select Yearling Sale at Karaka.

A sister to the Group III WRC Desert Gold Stakes winner Duchess Kate, Saavoya is a granddaughter of the Group 1 Avondale Cup winner Eva Grace (Vice Regal).

A brother to Duchy Of Savoy was purchased by Danny O'Brien Racing for $280,000 out of the Arrowfield draft at the Magic Millions last year.

The daughter of Savabeel has a yearling colt by The Autumn Sun and a filly foal by Snitzel.

She was covered by The Autumn Sun again last spring.
