First Stakes Winner for Whittington - Stampe Too Slick in Lough Neagh

Mark Smith - Saturday December 18

Stampe made eleven starts in stakes races without a win, but it was 12-times a charm for the five-year-old son of Whittington in Saturday’s Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

Sean Cormack made all the running on the Chris Munce-trained gelding who defeated Sambro (Fastnet Rock) by with Profit (Dundeel) a further back in third.

It was the first win in almost 12 months for Stampe who advances his record to seven wins, five seconds and five thirds from 34 starts with earnings $597,900.

“He deserved that. He has been knocking on the door,” Munce said.

‘The lack of speed gave Sean the opposition of rolling to the front and he came back underneath him really well.

‘He’s very tough, but I do not no what to do with him now. We were tossing up whether to run him in the wild card in two weeks time but that means coming back to 1200m. I’m not sure that is an option but we will work out a plan in the next couple of weeks.”

A homebred for Phillip Gutzke and Malcolm Schumacher, Stampe is the best of two winners from five to race out of the Monashee Mountain (USA) mare Envelope who died in 2017.

Stampe honours Grandview Stud’s Breeders’ Plate winner Whittington with his first stakes-winner.

The son of Tale Of The Cat (USA) stands for a fee of $3,300.
