One To Watch - Bendigo

Mark Smith - Sunday December 12

You would go a long way to see a more impressive debut than the four-year-old Contributer (IRE) gelding Untouchable Ed in a 1300m maiden at Bendigo on Sunday.

Back last at the 200m, Untouchable Ed launched down the centre of the track under Harry Coffey to defeat the favourite Sugarpiehoneybunch (Rich Enuff) by two lengths with a further three-quarters of a length back to third placed Reckless Moon (Puissance De Lune).

Carrying the colours of Hong Kong-based Price Bloodstock, Untouchable Ed is trained by Symon Wilde at Warrnambool.

Coffey said the son of Contributer (IRE) has a lot to learn about racing.

"He wasn't brilliantly away, and my instructions were to not be too excited. He was in the market, but they wanted him to get cover and learn a lot from the experience and if he was to win then that's the benefit from today's outing," Coffey told racing.com.

"He was really green, moving around in the run a lot. He took a lot of guiding, he's still very new, very raw.

"He's a bit of a lad, he plays around with his head and likes to move the bridle around a fair bit in his mouth.

"When I pulled him out in the straight I thought, 'oh we'll get home and run a nice third' and then I gave him one with the whip on his backside and he took off into top gear and was too good.

"It's pretty exciting to see what he can do when he knows what's going on because today he was pretty green."

Untouchable Ed was a $50,000 purchase by John Foote from the Oaks Stud draft at the 2020 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale.

A half-brother to the Group 1 WRC Levin Classic winner Dukedom (Batchelor Duke), he is the fifth foal of the unraced Bianconi (USA) mare Bianca Bay.

Untouchable Ed is the penultimate foal of Bianca Bay. Her final foal is the unraced 3yo Vadamos (FR) filly The High Line.
