Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday December 10

Progeny of Snitzel have won three of the twelve editions of the Inglis Nursery, including the inaugural winner, the enormously popular, Chance By in 2009.

Twin Hills Stud's Snitzel stallion Odyssey Moon made a successful career debut in the 2014 Inglis Nursery.

Two years ago, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Snitzel colt Wild Ruler introduced himself to the world when making a winning debut in the Inglis Nursery.

At Randwick on Saturday, the Snitzel/Snowden connection will hopefully strike again with Calgary Stampede.

The 2yo feature boasts an impressive roll-call of previous winners including, She Will Reign, Mossfun and Extreme Choice.

The favourite for the Nursery is the Victorian visitor Boldinho who will be out to give trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace consecutive winners of the race following the Fastnet Rock colt Acrobat twelve months ago.

Boldinho is a son of Brazen Beau who sired the 2018 winner Accession.

At his only start, Boldinho finished second in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes at Caulfield to the I Am Invincible filly Ebhaar, who is nominally the number one seed among the Snowden two-year-olds.

Calgary Stampede made a winning debut at a midweek meeting at Rosehill back on November 17.

Calgary Stampede a $350,000 Inglis Easter yearling

The son of Snitzel has drawn one from the outside, which may not be a bad thing considering the prospect of a heavy track.

At the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, China Horse Club / Newgate Bloodstock went to $350,000 for Calgary Stampede from the Newgate Farm draft.

Bred by Greg and Donna Kolivos, he is the third foal of the More Than Ready (USA) mare Nayeli who raced in the silks of the Kolivos' Lightning Thoroughbreds.

A $260,000 purchase by Gai Waterhouse / James Harron Bloodstock out of the Corumbene Stud draft at the 2013 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Nayeli is a half-sister to stakes-placed Brightest out of the stakes-placed Danehill mare Wasimah, a daughter of Group I winner Kapchat.

A daughter of Centaine, Kapchat has left Group III winner Kaphero and stakes-winner Princesa, the dam of Group II winners Star of Giselle and Solicit.

Nayeli captured the Group III Chairman's Stakes at Caulfield at two and later the Listed Fireball Stakes at Randwick when trained by Gai Waterhouse.

The daughter of More Than Ready (USA) made one start for the Snowdens at what proved to be her final start. That came in the Group III Nivison Stakes, where she defeated Eremein's half-sister Peace Force, the dam of the promising $2.1million Exceed And Excel colt Nobel.

Nayeli's first foal. A filly by Not A Single Doubt sold for $280,000 to Sheamus Mills at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Named Rakkaus, she won at her first start for Tony Gollan at the Sunshine Coast but has not been seen out since finishing third at Ipswich in January.

The second foal, Don't Hesitate, a brother to Calgary Stampede, also went the way of the Newgate/China Horse Club partnership for $440,000 at Easter in 2020. He is with Anthony and Sam Freedman and is yet to race.

Newgate Farm will consign an I Am Invincible colt of Nayeli, on behalf of Lightning Thoroughbreds, to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January.

Nayeli foaled an I Am Invincible filly on September 12.
