Wootton Bassett Covering the Cream in Both Hemispheres

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday December 1

Coolmore’s Tom Magnier was active during the second session of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale purchasing two exceptional mares in Cayenne Pepper and Sunday Times for 2 million and 1.8 million guineas with both mares confirmed to visit Wootton Bassett (GB), when he returns to Ireland after covering a stellar book of mares here in Australia.

A Group II winning and multiple Group I placed performer by Galileo’s champion son Australia, Cayenne Pepper traces in tail female line to Allegretta, the dam of Arc winning blue hen Urban Sea, so it’s not hard to see why she is such a special purchase.

"She was just a lovely physical, she will go to Wootton Bassett,” said Tom Magnier.

“Hopefully we will have a bit of luck with her, all the top people have been talking about her all week, we are fortunate to have got her. It is a page we know well and when you have a page like that, and the physical and the ability, we are delighted to have her."

A Group III winning and Group I placed daughter of Holy Roman Emperor, Sunday Times already has the runs on the board as a producer being the dam of dual Group I winner Newspapertimes and another stakes-winner Classical Times.

"She is an absolute cracker," said Magnier.

"She has bred a champion and hopefully she is carrying a full-sister to her. She is a very nice mare, she has done it before and Newspaperofrecord was incredible, what she did in the Breeders' Cup that day. She will be for Wootton Bassett. There is plenty going on in the page all the way down. It is a lot of money for her, but let's hope it is worth it!"

Wootton Bassett has had burgeoning success in 2021 with his bigger and better crops of foals just starting to make their presence felt on the track.

Wootton Bassett has sired 13 stakes-winners this year highlighted by two Group I winners in Incarville and Zellie, who is one six two year-old stakes-winners.

Wootton Bassett is poised to soar to greater heights and has been warmly greeted by Australian breeders this spring seeking a genuine Group I sire with an outcross pedigree.
