One to Watch – Bendigo

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday November 10

Trevor Delroy of Wyadup Valley has a happy knack for breeding and racing quality stayers and we might have seen the beginning of a new chapter in his success with a debut winner at Bendigo on Wednesday.

Trained by Danny O’Brien, three year-old Street Boss (USA) colt Swahili kicked off his career with a strong finishing short neck win in the 1300m maiden beating older rivals.

Easy in the market, Swahili obviously broke his maiden on raw talent and certainly has the pedigree to suggest longer trips will be more his forte.

A homebred for Trevor Delroy, Swahili is the second winner from his Group I BRC Queensland Oaks winner Gondokoro, who was also bred and raced by Mr Delroy.

By champion sire Zabeel, Gondokoro is a full sister to another Group I winning stayer bred by Mr Delroy in Zabeelionaire, who he sold as a yearling.

Gondokoro has been covered by Crowded House (GB) in the past two seasons producing a yearling colt and filly foal.

Swahili looks a bright prospect for Anamoe’s sire Street Boss, who was switched to Darley NSW for this spring and given a fee increase to $55,000.
