Impressive Double for Belardo Fillies

Media Release - Thursday October 28

Today’s racing provided an impressive double for Haunui Farm stallion BELARDO (IRE) (Lope De Vega) with two fillies from his first crop stamping their mark at Te Aroha today.

Belardo had two smart winners on Thursday.

In the first on the card, Bella Luce (NZ) (Belardo) gapped her rivals over 1000m showing the benefit of two previous starts from the stable of Shaun and Emma Clotworthy.  There was plenty of cheering coming out of the Haunui Farm office given the filly was bred by and is part-owned by Administration Manager, Diane Rushworth and her husband Shane Voice.

Fast forward to race five on the card and debutant Verona (NZ) (Belardo) landed an impressive maiden victory over 1400m for the Jenna Mahoney stable.  Lining up against older mares, her effort over the last furlong saw her finish with just over a length to spare and suggests more ground won’t pose a problem.

In what has been and continues to be a frustrating time in Auckland, these results certainly help to put a spring in the step of the team here at Haunui with both fillies carrying the Haunui brand.  The training efforts of Shaun and Emma Clotworthy and, Jenna Mahoney shouldn’t go unnoticed as well with both fillies trained at Byerley Park in the Auckland region.

Haunui Farm’s Mark Chitty says, “It’s just great to see BELARDO get that result today.  It’s fair to say he has had a quieter start to the season than we had hoped off the back of his Champion 2YO and First Season Sire titles.  But the way in which those two fillies won today suggests they could be quite progressive which is exciting and given his is a sireline that gets better with age, hopefully the results will start to come.”

BELARDO is currently serving his fifth season at Haunui Farm in 2021 at a fee of $10,000 + GST.

If you need any evidence as to why you should still consider breeding your mare later in the season, take a look at this article written by Breednet’s Tara Madgwick.  Titled November Foals Kick Goals, it definitely provides some food for thought, especially when you consider the likes of NATURE STRIP, ANAMOE, MO’UNGA, and PROBABEEL, were all born in November …
