Veteran Mare has Her Day in the Sun

Mark Smith - Saturday August 28

The Gavin Bedggood-trained No Effort was rewarded for her consistency with a fighting win in Saturday’s Listed Tile Importer Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield.

At a time when most of her contemporaries are in the broodmare paddocks, the 7yo daughter of Reward For Effort scored a career high win under Beau Mertens in defeating Ziegfeld (GB) (New Approach) by a long-neck with a further length back to Tralee Rose (Tavistock) in third.

In earning her first stakes success, No Effort advanced her record to ten wins, four seconds and eight thirds from 44 starts with earnings of $688,455.

“How good was that? I said to Beau that she probably went a little too slow in front the other day,” Bedggood said.

“Getting a nice rolling tempo the whole way, build it up from a long way out, try and pinch a break on some of these horses who might not be ready to go today, where she is. If you get run down late then that’s my problem.

“She had four metropolitan wins before today and to get a stakes win next to her name, the owners are breeders so she’ll stay with them forever now.”

Bred by Monomeith Stud Farm, no Effort is the first live foal of the 5-time winning Lion Cavern (USA) mare Hold The Lion who has a sad tale to tell.

From the family of Epsom Oaks winner Bireme and the former Newhaven Park Stud stallion Buoy, Hold The Lion was not covered for five seasons after foaling No Effort.

She missed in 2019 and was covered by Palentino last November.

No Effort becomes the eighth stakes0winner for Chatswood Stud’s prolific winner-getter Reward For Effort.

The son of Exceed And Excel stands for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST) this spring.
