Paulele Gives Then Weight and a Beating in The Rosebud

There may be a few hard-luck stories but take away nothing from Paulele, who carried his top-weight to a two and a half-length triumph in Saturday's Listed The Rosebud (1100m) at Randwick.

The final leg of a 4-timer for James McDonald, Paulele sailed down the centre of the track to defeat the Snitzel pair In The Congo and Remarque.

In The Congo was held up behind the tiring In Command before darting back to the fence. He held second by a half-neck from Remarque, who was stopped in his tracks as the 300m.

Trained by James Cummings, Paulele becomes the second winner of the race for the former Darley shuttler New Approach (IRE) after Dawn Passage in 2019.

Paulele was making his first start since an equally impressive performance in the Kindergarten Stakes over the same course and distance on April 10.

The Godolphin homebred advances his record to four wins from six starts with earnings of  $366,600.

"He's a lovely colt blessed with a wonderful turn of foot," Cummings said.

"He has that speed on top of the ground he showed on the rain-affected ground in the Kindergarten.

"He shouldered the 59kgs first-up, and he will be better suited in the San Domenico in a few weeks.

"We think he is a fast colt, and I would not be getting carried away in expecting him to run a mile.

"We have talked about various targets. I think the right thing for this colt is to be picking off the right races on the way through, so the San Domenico looms large as a suitable target.

"He has developed a beautiful record, and he has a little upside too. He came here off what was a relatively light preliminary.   

   A three-quarter brother to the Group III VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner Montsegur (New Approach) and a half-brother to Group III ATC Canonbury Stakes winner Tessera (Medaglia d'Oro), Paulele is one of seven winners from eight to race out of the Flying Spur mare Chatoyant.

A daughter of the blue hen Decidety (Last Tycoon), Chatoyant is a half-sister to Group 1 VRC Myer Classic winner Bonaria (Redoute's Choice), Group III winner Time Out (Rory's Jester) and the Group III winner and Group 1-placed Legally Bay (Snippets), the dam of Merchant Navy and Jolie Bay.

A second winner of The Rosebud in three years for Dawn Approach

The family made waves at various yearling sales in 2021.

Widden Stud consigned an I Am Invincible filly out of Bonaria to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where Busuttin Racing purchased her for $975,000.

Segenhoe Stud consigned an I Am Invincible colt out of Jolie Bay at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, which made $460,000 to the bid of M Dunn / Neil Jenkinson.

The final foal of Chatoyant is a yearling Exosphere filly. With three-stakes-winners to her credit, Chatoyant earned an honourable pension in February.

Paulele is one of 15 stakes-winners worldwide for the former Darley shuttler Dawn Approach (IRE), who had a resurgence this year through the deeds of the English Two Thousand Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Poetic Flare.
