Sebring Filly Biscayne Bay Charges Late to Claim the SA Sires' Produce Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday May 8

Supporters of the well-backed Sebring filly Biscayne Bay were on tenterhooks for all but the final 50 metres of Saturday’s Group III South Australia Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville.

Desperately searching for a run in the straight, Damien Oliver found a seam on the Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained filly to defeat the Written Tycoon colt Blushing Tycoon by a head with the Frosted (USA) filly Cloudy a half-neck back in third.

A two-length winner at Sandow on March 21, Biscayne Bay was edged out by Three Kings after a torrid run in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes at Flemington.

“We have a high opinion of her. I thought she was a bit stiff last start when she drew the wide gate, went right back and made a long, sustained run and she was just nutted on the line,” Ben Hayes said.

“Today, not everything went to plan. It was a hard watch, full of emotions, but it was great ride by Ollie and great to get the result.

“We were hoping to be a bit closer, but she missed the start and didn’t look to be travelling. She was on and off the bit. But there was a lot of merit in the run. She has so much improvement and to take that inside run and win like she did was a great result.”

A $410,000 purchase by Sun Bloodstock out of the Widden Stud draft at the 2020 MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Biscayne Bay advances his record to two wins and a second from four starts with earnings of $130,195.

Biscayne Bay a $410,000 Gold Coast yearling

A half-brother to the Group II ATC Reisling Stakes winner Tenley (Medaglia D'Oro), Biscayne Bay is one of two winners from four to race out of the Lonhro mare Fratianne.

Purchased by Widden out of the Godolphin draft at the 2017 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale, Fratianne is a half-sister to the stakes-placegetters Avalanches (Street Cry) and Palm Trilogy (Dubai Destination) out of the stakes-placed Danehill mare Dubai Ice, a sister to the dam of Vancouver, Just Momente and Captain Coltish.

Fratianne missed to Zoustar last spring after foaling a Trapeze Artist filly.

From the penultimate crop by Sebring, Biscayne Bay becomes his 68th stakes-winner.
