Good News for Supporters of Star Turn and Sooboog

Mark Smith - Sunday April 18

Two of the best-looking stallions around, Kitchwin Hills Sooboog and Vinery Stud’s Star Turn, had their supporters for Champion First Season Sire for number of winners and they are giving the faithful a run for their money.

Both were mong the winners at Wagga Wagga on Sunday.

The first to strike was star Turn when the Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained filly Mortal Witness opened her account at start four in the Prized Icon Maiden Hcp (1200m).

Ridden by Blaike McDougall, Mortal Witness could not have been any more impressive. Showing an impressive turn of foot, the bay filly was being eased down in the closing stages to defeat the fast-finishing Bombulla Boy (Bull Point) by a length and a half.

Mortal Witness had shown ability from day one. At her career debut she was a close-up fourth in the $500,000 Inglis Banner at Moonee Valley won by Sneaky Five.

The daughter of Star Turn was a $35,000 purchase by Lionrock Bloodstock out of the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

She is the second foal and first winner out of the All American mare Mortal Sin.

The Tash Burleigh-trained Princess Spice was never a factor at her career debut at Rosehill last November, but found a winning race Bede Murray Maiden Hcp (1000m).

The daughter of Sooboog was the lone 2yo in the race. She was brave under Jordan Mallyon in a driving finish to defeat the 3yo Statue Of Liberty (USA) gelding Liberalized by a neck.

Princess Spice is a homebred daughter of the Myboycharlie (IRE) mare Princess Ailani, a winner of three of her 10 starts, who died shortly after foaling Princess Spice.

Star Turn and Sooboog take their tally of individual winners to seven, just one behind the frontrunner Capitalist.
