Tick Off Another Feature to First Season Stallions - Star Turn's Sonnet Star Claims Wellington Boot

Mark Smith - Sunday March 28

Another feature goes to the first season stallions with the Star Turn filly Sonnet Star carrying the Vinery Stud colours to victory in Sunday’s $200,000 Hermitage Hill Wellington Boot (1100m).

There was a sensation before the star when Sonnet Star’s better-fancied stablemate Tidal Impact (Shalaa (IRE)) and Cosmic Serenade (Your Song) were scratched at the barriers.

Trained at Wyong by Damien Lane, Sonnet Star was coming off a career debut second to Lovemetender over 1000m at Randwick-Kensington on March 10.

The chestnut daughter of Star Turn travelled sweetly in the run for Robbie Dolan as Mezinjit and Mabel set the early speed. Bursting between runners at the 200m, Sonnet Star defeated the fast-finishing Pierro filly In The Blink by a length, with the Dream Ahead (USA) filly Mabel a long-neck back in third.

Retained to race by Vinery after being passed in short of her $30,000 reserve at the 2020 Classic Yearling Sale, Sonnet Star Is the first foal of the Poet’s Voice (GB) mare Sonnets Voice.

Sonnet Star could not make her $30,000 reserve at the Inglis Classic

A winner at Cessnock and Muswelbrrok in a 7-start career, Seven Sonnets has been a regular to the sales arena. She was offered for sale four times in five years. The latest coming when Sun Bloodstock purchased her for $65,000 at the 2019 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale when carrying a sister to Sonnet Star.

A half-sister to the Group II ATC Expressway Stakes winner Happy Galaxy (Nadeem), Seven Sonnets is a granddaughter of the Group 1 STC Coolmore Classic heroine Porto Roca (Barathea), the dam of the  Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso and Fiorentina, the dam of Group 1 MVRC William Reid Stakes winner Silent Sedition.

Sonnet Star becomes the fifth winner for Star Turn, an honourable member of a stellar group of firest season sires.
