Fabergino Back Doing What She Does Best

Mark Smith - Saturday February 27

The grey flyer Fabergino bounced back from a solid fourth in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning to run her opponents into the ground when defending her title in Saturday’s ATA/Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m) down the straight at Flemington.

It was a Western Australian 1-2 as the 6yo daughter of Maschino defeated the Neville Parnham-trained Indian Pacific (Zoustar) by a long-head with three-quarters of a length back to the fast-finishing Humma Humma (Denman).

With her sixth stakes success, Fabergino advances her record to twelve wins, a second and two thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $830,800.

With trainer Tiamna Robertson back home in Perth, stable representative Dylan Wilson said it was unusual for Fabergino to back up in a fortnight.

“That was absolutely super. I think a lot of people were questioning the two weeks between runs before today,” Wilson said.

“But she has been that happy at home that it wasn’t that much of an issue coming into this. She was as well coming into today as she was into the Group 1. That was just super. She showed how well she was feeling with the performance.

“She’s got that real bulldog mentality and she always seems to have that little more should she need it. Indian Pacific was super today but if it got a bit closer to her, I’m sure she would have pulled away if needed.”

Winning jockey Michael Poy said he came to the race full of confidence.

“I spoke to Tiarnna on the way here. I was pretty bullish about our chances,” Poy said.

“We beat Bivouac last start and if Bivouac was to start in this race it would have been well under odds-on. We were just off Nature Strip and not far off September Run who is favourite in the Newmarket. So, I thought we’d come here and should be winning. It was good to get the job done.

“I think the horse is coming back here soon for an 1100 metre (run) and the horse has pulled up well. Seeing it trotting back down the roses, a few of the crowd was roaring and she grabbed the bit and wanted to get going.”

Fabergino  is a first-crop daughter of Alwyn Park’s Encosta De Lago stallion Maschino, and is raced by a partnership that includes her breeder Jim Anderson and some owners that are based in England.

Anderson also raced Maschino and bought Fabergino’s dam Miss Razyana (Danzero) through Michael Flannery Bloodstock for $36,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

John Chalmers Bloodstock outlaid $50,000 for a full-sister to Fabergino at the 2020 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

Miss Razyana won her first two starts at Canterbury, but when she bled in the 2008 Listed Nivison Stakes at Randwick she was sent to North America where she won in Canada before being repatriated.

The daughter of Danzero has a colt foal by Maschino and was covered by him again last spring.
