Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Thursday February 4

With a first prize equal to that of the Magic Millions 2yo Classic, the Inglis 2yo Millennium will dramatically impact the race for leading two-year-old sire, but it is just one of five black-type races for the babies on Saturday.

Caulfield hosts the two divisions of the Group III Neds Blue Diamond Prelude. On the Inglis Millennium undercard at Randwick, the day will kick-off with the Darley Lonhro Plate. Is there one that can replicate the success of the 2019 hero Bivouac?

Not to be outdone Pinjarra has their big Magic Millions day with Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic taking centre stage.

There will be no badge of courage for selecting the odd-on favourite Profiteer to bank the $1,160,000 winners cheque for the Inglis Millennium (RL).

Profiteer was a $165,000 Inglis Classic yearling

It was not just his bloodless victory at his career debut over 1100 metres at Flemington on December 12. The son of Capitalist could not have been any more impressive in his barrier trial at Rosehill on January 27.

He cruised around that day in slick time, leaving some promising performers in his wake. They included Chris Waller’s I Am Invincible colt Zarastro and Hawkes Racing’s Fastnet Rock colt Hilal who made a winning career debut at Randwick on Wednesday.

When a stallion can increase his sales average with his second crop, you know plenty of trainers out there are happy with the way his progeny is shaping.

Despite his large draft at the recent Magic Millions, Capitalist achieved that feat.

His progeny sold to $975,000. Clocking in at seventh most expensive was the $375,000 outlaid by Laurel Oak Bloodstock P/L (FBAA) for Newgate Farm’s sister to Profiteer.

The sister to Profiteer made $375,000 at the Magic Millions

First season stallions are enjoying a great run. It was an all first season stallion finish at Profiteer’s debut.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained colt was sent straight to the front by Michael Dee. He extended his margin at every call to defeat the highly touted Winning Rupert colt Ranveer by two and a quarter lengths with the Territories (IRE) filly Sunday Yum Cha three-quarter of a length back in third.

Profiteer was a $165,000 purchase by Roll The Dice Racing Pty Ltd / Rogers Bloodstock out of the Newgate Farn draft at the 2020 Classic Yearling Sale.

He is the first foal of the well-performed Snitzel mare Athena Lass, a Moonee Valley 2yo winner when on debut and placed in the Group III Quezette Stakes at Caulfield.

A half-sister to the Listed VRC Gibson Carmichael Stakes winner Euryale (Lonhro), Athena Lass is out of the Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) mare Meduesa, a daughter of the Group 1 Flight Stakes and Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Danglissa (Danzero).

Fusaichi Pegasus (Mark Smith)

Considering that Capitalist is out of a Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) mare, Profiteer is inbred 3s x 3d to the Kentucky Derby winner.

While he has proven to be a first-rate broodmare sire, Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) spent as much time parading around on two legs than four.

There does not appear to be an issue with the temperament of Profiteer - he looks pretty foolproof.

Capitalist has three runners in the Millennium. His Newgate Farm barn mates Extreme Choice, Flying Artie and Winning Rupert have one each.

Other first-season sires represented include Star Turn, Sooboog and Shalaa (IRE).

Currently leading Capitalist by nearly $1million in the race for leading first season sire, Shalaa (IRE) has a leading contender in the filly Nice for What whose chances were dealt a blow at the barrier draw.
